A peel is a cosmetic treatment that removes the top layer of the skin. They are often categorised by their depth: superficial, medium and deep.
More dramatic skin improvement can be achieved by deep skin peels.
Enzymatic peel: Mild – can be used on all skin types. Provides a fresher appearance to the skin.
Chemical peel: Medium – used to treat skin conditions and have a more pronounced effect.
The type and depth of your skin peel will have a significant impact on your final results. Skin peels are designed to revitalise dull, dry or damaged complexions, while also improving the appearance of undesirable skin conditions such as acne, sun damage and visible signs of aging. Your skin peel will be customised to your individual skin care needs.
This will depend on your skin type and tone, and the current condition of your skin. After a consultation the aesthetician will be able to determine which skin peel will work best for you.
Enzyme peels are not painful, these feel like a light exfoliation of the skin and are often very relaxing and usually performed by a beautician. You may experience some discomfort ad a heating of the skin during the deeper chemical peels which is why these are best performed in a clinical environment.
A course of treatments is recommended for best results but you should see an improvement in most skin conditions with just one treatment. Results are long lasting but need topping up.
The following side effects may occur straight after your peel:
Rest assured that these symptoms are normal to this type of treatment, particularly in patients with sensitive skin or where the peel has been applied to a sensitive area.
Your skin may feel tight or drier – this is quite normal. To help hydrate the skin we advise applying the aftercare products recommended.
If, however, you experience any severe redness or irritation after your treatment please contact the clinic for advice. The practitioner may discontinue treatment.
So that you will get the best results, we will give you an at home regime to use for 2 weeks prior to treatment to prepare your skin for the peel, you will continue to use this 48 hours after the peel. We are sure you will love the products and of course, you can continue to use them indefinitely.
It is advisable to wait 48 hours following your peel before resuming your normal skincare regime. Downtime varies from none to 4 or 5 days depending on the peel used.
As an intensive course, treatments are carried out weekly or fortnightly depending on skin type. You will be advised of when your next appointment should be.
You must apply a sunscreen daily, with a minimum of SPF30, throughout the course of treatment and thereafter to protect your skin from sun damage.
